It might have been rainy and cold in Mahopac, N.Y. this past weekend, but that didn‘t stop the Bull Burger Battle competitors from bringing the heat! Fifteen of New York‘s best burger cooks gathered at Best in Backyards on Saturday to compete for a coveted spot at the 2015 World Food Championships in Kissimmee, Fla.
Joe Saccente of Shrub Oak, N.Y. competed in the 2014 burger battle and came in last place. This year, Saccente decided to give it another try, and boy did it pay off for him. With a score of 91.667, Saccente left Best in Backyards with bragging rights, a new Bull grill, and a Golden Ticket and sponsored trip to compete in the World Food Championships.
Saccente admitted that last year he over thought his strategy and this year, decided to go with an entirely different approach, giving the judges exactly what they wanted — a simply delicious hamburger. Saccente‘s new strategy worked. His “All American Cheeseburger” won over the judges‘ taste buds and finished 4 points above the second place burger.
Dave Conti of Red Planet BBQ also impressed the judges with his “The Earth, Surf and Fire Burger,” which came in 2nd place with a score of 87. Trailing closely behind Conti was Rocky Jullianelle of Big Rock BBQ; Jullianelle‘s “Big Rick Bacon Cheesburger” came in 3rd place with a score of 86.1667.
While the cooks were grilling, Best in Backyard and Bull Outdoor employees kept the audience entertained. Bull passed out delicious samples of pizza and hamburgers while 100.7 WHUD‘s morning host, Mike Bennett, played music and passed out prizes to the public. People also enjoyed getting their faces painted and playing corn hole!
The judges for the Mahopac Bull Burger Battle were Mike Bennett, Will Hanson, Bill Pope and Thomas Iannicari — thank you to each of you for spending your day with us!
